Helping Honduras …

Feed the birds

When we reached the mountain today, we were met by a very long line of patients waiting for the medical and dental clinics to open. So many people that we postponed the team Eucharist to tomorrow. We had a very long day. ¡Que sorpresa! But it was a good day. I filled lots of prescriptions, helped “fix” a tent that was about to fall down, and took photos of dozens of children.
The team dinner was this evening, but Bess had some homework that was past due, so she and I stayed at the hotel instead of going to the dinner. We grabbed a bit of food from the hotel restaurant (probably the worst fries I have had in five years and a couple of desserts), and I dozed while she wrote a villanelle about zip-lining at the falls yesterday. She is taking an independent study with a poet on the UNT faculty this summer and is trying to keep up with her class while here in Honduras. Not an easy task with the kind of days we have.
The rest of the evening has been conversation, filling small bags with beads to give to the children tomorrow, and feeding Bess’s leftover Del Monte fruit cocktail to the birds in the cages out front of the hotel: parrots, ducks and some kind of vulture. Then we played on the merry-go-round.
The evening ended with a quasi-philosophical discussion with Marlon (our Honduran dentist) and Stace.
¡Hasta mañana!
